Symptoms and Complications

High blood pressure hardly ever causes symptoms; this means that it can go unnoticed until it causes something severe such as a stroke or heart attack.

What Causes
High Blood Pressure?Age, lifestyle choices and heredity are all factors in whether or not a person will develop high blood pressure. Some populations including African Americans and Hispanics tend to develop the disease at much higher rates than other groups and can have more serious complications.

For an estimated 90% of people with high blood pressure the cause is unknown, this is called “essential hypertension.” The good news is that treating high systolic blood pressure in older adults can significantly decrease your risk for stroke. Heart attack and cardiovascular death.
